TOXICOLOGY STATISTICS

The top 3 drugs in driving cases were THC, ethanol, and methamphetamine for the second consecutive year. Fentanyl increased from #11 in 2019 to #7 in 2020.

From 2019 to 2020, Fentanyl and Heroin prevalence in overdose case types increased 98% and 61%, respectively.

The number of fentanyl overdoses more than doubled between 2019 and 2020. The combination of heroin (noted by 6-MAM) and fentanyl continues to be a major problem.

The number of fentanyl analogues have decreased over the last two years. However, fentanyl abuse remains a serious issue.

ADFS Toxicology continues to validate and monitor new synthetic cannabinoids in casework. 5F-MDMB-PICA has been the most prevalent SynCan in 2019 and 2020.

Flualprazolam, Flubromazolam, and Etizolam are the top designer benzodiazepines in casework for 2020. These drugs mimic anxiety medications in chemical structure, but often do not have approved medical use in the USA.
